Please spend time each evening listening to your child read and also read aloud for him/her, modeling good reading skills. To gain deeper meaning of what is read, please discuss one or two of these each evening:
• Discuss the characters and how they act in the story.
• Do the characters remind you of yourself or someone else you know?
• Where does the story take place? When does it take place?
• Have your child retell events from the story – in order.
• Has something similar from the book happened to you?
• Act the story out! Make puppets of the characters and have a family puppet show!
• Think of another way this book could end.
• Figure out the meaning of unknown words.
• What is a problem the characters have to deal with? How is this problem solved?
• Do you like this book? Why or why not?
• Would you recommend this book to someone else?
• Was there a lesson that the characters learned in this story?
• What was a favorite part?
• What was something new/interesting you learned after reading?
• Does this book remind you of another book you have read?
Reading together should be fun, relaxed and enjoyable for all involved, and it is my desire that this experience be something you and your child look forward to and benefit from!
